D Y Chandrachud
The Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Y Chandrachud will retire on 10 November 2024.He was a Harvard Law School alumnus, did his LL.B from Faculty of Law, Delhi University. Now he is ex - Officio Patron in. Chief of National Legal Services Authority, and the de facto Chancellor of NLU Bangalore. He was appointed as the judge of Bombay High Court on 29th March 2000,and became Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on 31st October 2013 , and was appointed as a Judge of Supreme Court on 13 may 2016 and on 9 November 2022,He was appointed as the Chief Justice of India.
During his terms either as the Judge of Supreme Court or as the Chief Justice of India, he has been a judge of highest number of Constitutional cases. He not only judgments on Constitutional questions, but also on human rights, gender Justice, Public Interest Litigatiins, Criminal laws and Commercial laws. His tenure as the Chief Justice is longer than his Predecessors.
He delivered many Judgments, but following judgments are some of his notable judgments.
1.Right to Privacy judgment where he held that Right to Privacy is a consturionally guaranteed right, he overruled his father's judgment, pronounced in the infamous case of Habeas corpus case in 1976.In Aadhar case, he delivered dissenting judgment, he held Aadhar Act to be unconstitutional for lacking accountability and owing to its procedure.
D Y Chandrachud authored several judgments on gender Justice The Sabrimala case was the best example of it where he held that denying women's entry in the temple on the basis of physiology amounted to the practice of untouchability.
In Joseph Shine case he authored concurring judgment declaring the provision of IPC on adultery law as unconstitutional.
On LGBT right to marry, he delivered another dissenting judgment, and he talked about institutional limitations, that Special Marriage Act 1954 , cannot be interpreted to include LGBT within the purview of that act.
In February 2024,the entire Electoral bond scheme was struck down by Supreme Court, and D Y Chandrachud authored a judgment on it.
D Y Chandrachud was also part that bench which allowed construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
He authored numerous Judgments on affirmative action in India.
D Y Chandrachud without doubts is one of the finest judge of this century. History will judge him
